My pile for posterity
Some things can’t be done. For paractical reasons. I mean, forget the physical tasks, or the “too far and too fast” world. I’m looking at ideas that seem reasonable, until you check closely.
Imagine making the ultimate mix tape. Using magnetic media, or digital storage. Try to “make” a collection of the best music you have ever heard. When a certain age is reached (I;m there) you have heard too many songs to list. Trying to winnow your harvest down to a handful of grains would require an extraordinary mental filter.
What sent me off on this tangent was a revisit of Steeleye Span. I’ve been a fan for about fifty years, which fits well with their release of a 50 anniversary DVD. Tunes? All of them are great. Requires relistening, given that the groulp is still active and still making new material. By the time I get caught up, they’ll be ready for the Platinum edition.
See what I mean? Trying to priduce a “best of” collection is a fruitless effort. And so I won’t. If you ask for hints, I can give some, but then you are on your own. Journey of discovery. If you are also a performer, the task is beyond (everything).
So, if you’ll excuuse me, I will continue to delve into the archives. So many tunes, and the recognition that time will run out before I’ve even made a pile for posterity. And before I forget, there all those other tunes where I never learned the names. How do I tell anyone else about that magnificent subset of masterpieces? Shall I hum?
