Maake a record. Break a recod. Set a record.
Allow me to begin with a riddle: Who made a rectord which broke a record thereby creating a new record? Kate Bush.
And now a brief explanation, given that language is so full of incertitude. Back about four decades ago (BC, as in Before Children), the musician KB created a fantastich song, with an associated music video. “Running Up That Hill” If you are unfamiliar, take a detour via YouTube amd come back when you are better educated.
Yes. I remember the song. I liked it then, and I like it now.
To flesh out the riddle, KB created, berformed and made a physical artefact of the song. She recorded a record. And it started selling. We tend to keep statistics when sales get to a certain level, and she set a record with the song. And then another, in that it required thirty-seven years to make it all the way to Number One. Broke thAe previous record (I have no idea what that might be) and created a new record. With her record. Isn’t language fun?
I listened to an interview (recorded) with KB, as she explained her reaction to this new “fame”. To be fair, those of us who heard the song so many years ago, have not forgotten the song nor the artist. We all carry a wish that she will release new material. And we (collectively) appreciate that she is still a creative power field. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to watch (rewatch) the video. See if I can learn how to make rain, just in case. The video has garnered more than six hundred million “views”, which may set another record.
