Leaked opinion
Our neighbours (to the south) are a fascinating group. Fascinathing history, fascinating customs, fascinating laws In fact, the citizens then to be very (loud and) proud of their laws. A common practice is to pass a law, brag about the wisom (sanctity!!) of a given law, and then to spend a fortune trying to repeal a statute. Part of the wonder of a nation that is so divided unto itself.
Right now, the press is going off the rails, because of a leaked bit of “something” out of the Supreme Court. They have a few of those, and take great pleasure in proving one-upmanship. I don’t know the histiroy, nor the reasons, but something called Roe v. Wade is now broken. Maybe. That leaked bit of newsworthy is something called “an opinion”, and their courts set great weight into attaching the opinions of the judges to any legal judgement. Probably better than “secret court” or “kangaroo court”.
The opinion is leaked; the actual vote by the jodges hasn’t happened. But the next few days/weeks/months will be rough sailing. Any time you change a major law, it can have effects going back. Not forward. The idea of jurisprudence means “until we break something”. This time, they will. For half of the population. Did I forget to mention that there are two major gender groups, and one of them makes rules for the other. Equality under law works for others, but not our neighbours.
Until the actual vote (of the judges) is held, expect a lot of stress. The kind that divides a nation. I don’t think some people are going to sleep peacefully for the next while. Pity that for a nation based on its history, they’re clueless about the effects of rewriting it.
Not my circus, not my clowns. That hole in the fence remains a fascinating window.
