Reduced to a 2-D view
Although I’ve owned and used cameras for a very long time, I didn’t pay much attention to the numbers. Profits, sales numbers, financial forecasts. Still don’t; just not part of my interest set. However, I will make time for short review articles. Today, I learned that owning a big camera company isn’t as lucrative as it used to be. The industry has collapsed, leaving two big names from my period, and they’re both feeling the pain. Drops in profits mean that prices will have to rise. To levels that would knock me out of the store, if I was a shopper. Glad that I’m not in the market for new toys.
I do nave other interests. Right now, even with no intention to travel, my soft spot for train travel has me watching videos. Today, some time up by the Arctic Circle. Also, a multi-day trip across Australia. As I feared, a desert doesn’t get more interesting, the longer you spend watching out the window. On the train, the scenery is reduced to a 2-D level. Might as well rely on videos. I do. I mean, I am intrigued by a kangaroo curry, but not ehough to fly off to the other side of the world. I’ll wait for a canned version.
Also, my take on things is that the train sets are uniform, no matter where you board. Knowing that there are multiple places to plug in my electronics, or that the bunk gets rolled out by invisible attendants who leave a small chocolate wafer on my pillow leaves me indifferent. On the platform, rather than in the coach.
I would like to catch out of Halifax, transfer in Montreal to something headed for New York. That could happen. If it does, I’ll send myself some postcards. People still do that, right? I’ll have to decide on a grand loop for my itinerary. And a season. Not that far along in my plans. And money…
