Hardy stuff

Around here, the wind can be relentless. A rare day, when the breeze turns off. And if you have any experience with that sort of wind, you learn that it will pick out the flaws (in construction) that you had missed. We’ve been here for seven years, and there are still moments of surprise.

Over the weekend, the wind veered east. Full east. And when we heard unfamiliar banging outside, we had to get out there. This house is covered with long strips of vinyl. Interloced. Designed to withstand winds of “up to some untested speed”. One strip had unlocked from its friends in the rows, and now we had percussion, with a terrible beat. You can’t do repairs under a gale force wind, so we waited a couple of days. Time for the wind to veer south by west (the banging stopeed). Today. With photos, a visit to the local building supply store was in order.

They’re familiar with such things. Able to identify not only the manufacturer and determine the color (although a printed label on the slapping strip helpted. Abble to suggest someone in the area that could effect repairs. Able to tell us where the original installers had misssed their calling. I’m OK with that part. Pm a strictire the size of a house, there will be details. And we’ve made it to seven years, which points out that this was an extraordinary event. Not summer breeze. Rather, a nod to the indifference of a strong wind to the efforts of mankind. I have a tree, over there, felled by a wintery blast.

That we have alreaddy lined up someone to supply materials and effect repairs is why I love living here. In the big city, we could have spent the summer seeking help. Ahd they have winds in the city, too.

Cutting away the debris required more than one set of shears, so I finally can attest to the sturdiness of vinyl siding.
