Room for a new body
There’s a new body I the house. Not somebody; I choose my words carefully. Came in with the fternoon, courier. Zzzzzzzzzzzzi btought out my knapsack of expensive treasures, because I have a lot of glass that needs to shine, in the optical sense.
My collection covers (lke much of my life) a half-century of choices. I’m married to a brand name, that has held up the best of my photographed moments. Good material, so all still work. If anything, I’ve added, not replaced my choices. And as my ability to see my way diminishes, it is high time to convence someone else of a world that can be seen from a number of angles. You know: wide-angle, standard, macro, telephoto. Different angles.
Have I given up on photography as a hobby? No. It’s just that I’m allowing the magic of autofocus to do much of the heavy lifting. A generation ago, I carried a big (blinded by the light) electronic flash. Now I depend on adjusted ISO, and sensors that aren’t baffled by low light (unlike my own eyes). As long as I can determine where to point my attention, the camera does the rest. Hehce the purchase of a new body. Not for me. For the person that will take on the responsibilities of recording our lives going forward. Now to break the attention lock of all our avian neighbours.
And remember that loyalty to one brand? It delivers added value, once you move beyond basic ownwership. Kit lenses will stay in a drawer, and we’ll depend on primes where possible. As for flash… only when things call for a push. More light. Outside, the moon is behind the clouds when you need it most.
