Back to class, with no pandemic rules in place

You’ve probably seen those odd math questions that pop up on social media. Usually, a poorly defined equation, where the combination of operators and brackets leave those of us who are math-diminished gasping. I’ve been watching the solution process, and what is clear is that a) the order of operations is important and b) there are several variants out there. What seems clear to one is pure gibberish to another. Oddly, that’s how I remember most of my math classes after leaving the safe harbour of elementary school.

When you pay to work or play

The little I actually know about petroleum products can be measured using a thimble. Apparently, the stuff is really old. What I have heard is that “old fuel” isn’t good for our modern motors, and that my tank of winter Diesel (purchased about two years back) was ready to be burnt. And now it has been.

Should I get a better virtual airplane?

Actually, something newsworthy happened today: I drove the new car, all the way to the train station and back. Not going to make any assumptions going forward, but the first time is now recorded.

A perception of wrongdoing

Our supper was either “take out “ or “carry in”. Or a combination… suffice to accept that it did require a short trip by car to get from there to here. And I didn’t have to prepare anything, beyond my reheat on a BBQ pork chop. The decision to leave the lobster to another was made by mutual choice. And just because, there was an oversize portion of potato salad, along with some wonderful seafood chowder. I’ll eat my blueberry whatever later. Fundraisers locally tend to overfeeding,

Moving, just more slowly

We may have a lot of rain, but we don’t have wildfires. That should be a motto, given that missing a beach day is better than missing your home. On the West Coast, it’s not going well.  And we still have weeks to go before snow.

That game clock is just symbolic

“… and the shootout is going into extra time”.  When I called up the streamed feed, this morning, I suspected that the gold medal match might seem long. First hint: a banner showing “Tokyo 2020”. As someone that doesn’t follow footie (is that the right term), my coming to watch the big game is almost wrong. The only familiar thing in view is a red jersey (for Canada).

Recalling those Seven League boots

I admit, my own travel experiences are limited. Bit of hometown boy, be I. But I grew up with the idea that the TV would broaden all horizons. Still does, when I take the time to wade through the hundreds of channels now available. This evening, I want to recall how it all began, for me. How old am I?

With the right music, anything is possible

Just like with a small boat… sometimes you need to give a touch to the tiller and set your heading in a new direction. For me, I can reset my compass with a bit of music.

Evolving with a bigger ride

I was inevitable. I collect old movies. And I don’t always watch them in a timely fashion. The going to live forever thought system. Anyhow, I was skimming several titles this evening, trying to find a badly remembered sequence, and I learned that some of my titles are junk. Not the original movie; the badly copied versions that seem to be created in a middle-school data test. I’ll replace those that I notice, since I have a long range view, but why can’t stuff be done properly from the get go.

Used to hunt for stray nickels

Finding ways to grift: a primer from the political class. Back when I was young, to nickel and dime meant checking payphone returns, or looking around near parking meters for dropped wealth. Never found more than enough for an occasional popsicle, so I gave up and moved on to more lucrative things. Turns out that even minimum wage jobs provide enough cash for double-fisting pops. I was thinking small change.
