Just a DIY maintenance guy

Our genny is a faithful servant. Sits outside, beside the house, through the worst of weather. Waiting for a chance to serve us. In return, randomly, I check the status window and decide if any maintenance is required.

Watching for a coffee bean hike/spike

Spent the afternoon on my unsolved puzzle: how to update the RV radio. I feel, after several hours, that I’ve been chasing my tail. Ineffective. I did the usual deep dive into user-created content, and after multiple “maybe this time…”, I am back in the house. Another afternoon. To be fair, the radio does what it is supposed to do. We have sound and maps, and so although I want more, I can accept the status quo. For now.

Extra-territorial police work

alMath for the economically challenged; if you make the numbers large enough, nobody will care. Right now, the First Nations are looking to the federal government for reparational funds. I mean, a lifetime has a value. Not to get into lives. So, one number being bandied about is four billion. As usual, there are some that wonder about how our national budget will ever handle an amount like that.

Update, upgrade or replace

Having a mission to complete gives purpose to my life.  Right now, I’m tasked with upgrading the maps in the onboard navigation system of the RV.

Bad air, back in the house

Once upon a time, I had some really decent music teachers. They took the time to introduce me to the English concert band repertoire. There, I had a prolonged chance to enjoy the musical genius of Holst and Vaughn-Williams, among others. Oh, how I miss my weekly dose of band practice (along with the rare chance to perform). This afternoon, I came across some playlists, on YT. The years melted away, and I’m back to counting rests, behind my timpani.

In the market for a castle or two?

Slow news day: we have a replacement governor-general. There doesn’t seem to be an actual training course for the job, which is why we have had a line of retired politicians, journalists, astronauts, etc. The flavour for today day is “comes from the far north”. Since the person is there to approve, not make policy, it probably won’t affect me.

Society: rights vs requirements

Right now, the most important statistic for many around me is whether or not you have been vaccinated against COVID-19 via the public health service. I’m going to try to avoid slipping into a “rant” mode, but it won’t be easy. As of this date, fully 83% of the population (over the age of twelve) has started the process (which takes several months). The next logical move, by society, is to identify the 17% who have chosen an alternate strategy.

Preparing to confront the barbarian hordes

Dress appropriately. It doesn’t matter if the weather changes on an irregular, pseudorandom schedule. Dress in layers. Sounds like what a parent might say. Right now, in early July, we have rain showers and a top temperature of 12C. On second thought, I’ll just stay inside. At least when the ice age begins, my bed will be close by. And I know that the other coast can only wish for such a clement climate. Here, things will change; they always do. And I no longer have to fret about calling a bus for my flock of student sheep.

Will it taste like airline food?

Last weekend, one of those news stories that offered more questions than answers came across my feed. During the night, a dismembered airplane traveled from Trois-Rivières to Quebec City, on the back of a big truck. I guess taking the wings off really does disable the “flying machine”. Anyhow, the trip was made without incident, except that many people wanted to know the back story. Or the front story. Confusing. Why bring a carcass of a 737 anywhere?

Learning how to do things

How did we get anything done, before the web? I’ve been watching YouTube how-to videos, learning about the pitfalls of a project (that I’m not even committed to, yet). I can imagine myself, tools within reach, doing all sorts of marvellous things. But I come back to my original question.
