Postcards as a national distraction

Lock the doors! Shutter the windows! If not, the authorities will take care of things for you. Today, another public health teleconference, with increased restrictions. To protect us, because there are among us those too stunned to do so on a personal basis.

A different reward level

Isn’t that special! We now share something (other than being an island) with New Zealand. Heading back into lockdown (the polite term for an upgraded quarantine).

Just inject me, already

This afternoon, a survey popped up on my screen. A university group trying to determine how people are reacting to pandemic restrictions. It offered me a chance to add my two cents to the discussion, with anonymity (although, unfortunately without immunity). I went one step more, using my second language to complete the form. And the questions really were pointless.

Is your library sufficient to your needs?

I have read that “you are what you eat”. Perhaps, although most of that goes off to unseen places. I believe that we are actually “what you read”. Otherwise, most of our knowledge has to come from listening to others; a skill that few possess.

Outside, in shortish pants

Outside, with my shovel, in shortish pants; time to clear the thin layer of barely ice from the deck. Temperatures are above the point where ice retains solidity, so the job didn’t take long. Barely enough time for my coffee to cool to the comfortable drinking point. We do live in balmy times. Now, I’m enough of a realist (with a long memory) to accept change. As in, winter might roll in, tomorrow or the next day. For now, though, I’m able to look outside and dream of summer. Perhaps not “tourist summer”, but something that doesn’t require keeping snowshoes on hand (or is it foot)?

Time requires an explanation

IN one of my threads from social media, I’ve been reading about healthy lifestyles. The usual simple rules; regular exercise, diet control, sufficient sleep. All the things that we were raised to believe (thanks, Mom). Except that the storyline derailed… removing caffeine from my life. Whoa! There are limits! After all, coffee is just what you retain from running hot water (healthy) over roasted beans (sort of healthy).

Personal silhouettes

Not every news story affects me directly. However, I reserve the right to be offended, when something happens that goes against my personal beliefs. More later.

Operation window open/close

If only the sounds were more predictable. This afternoon, with the temperature just below freezing, and the house very quiet, I could hear little pops and clicks from the attic. Pops, mainly. As if nails were being unseated in the shingles. And it worries me, even if there’s no real need. Please, roof, stay in one place.

Faster than a speeding (whatever it is)

Our little patch of woods, just beyond the front door and separating us from the highway (quiet country road, down to the end of the island) is full of surprises. Today, for the first time, we watched a new animal come racing from the trees before diving under the step. What was it? Well, we’re not really sure. Synonyms abound, so we might have watched a weasel, or an ermine, or a stoat. I’ll ask someone that knows these things, while I draw a word picture. No actual photos (it was racing!)

But did you bank up the house?

Oddly, here in the frozen north, we never think about things like “what if the house freezes and water comes out of the ceiling”? After watching news clips from Texas, maybe we should. After all, it gets cold here for months at a time. Why don’t we get ceiling icicles?
