An acquaintance from my old office is showing off his latest acquisition, and I have so many questions. First of all, the photo shows a very high-tech chair, with praise for the comfort level. All I want to know is: does this mean he’s now working from home? You see, years ago, we campaigned in our cubicle farm to get better seats. We hung photos of better furniture in our respective spaces. We dropped hints to those who were paid to assure our safety and comfort (emphasis implied). We stood around, more than we should, to show that the cushions under our posteriors were insufficient. Nothing. Nada. Not even hand-me-downs from those with bigger desks.

Somewhere, the sun is shining, again. After four years of tension, they hit the reset switch, and the dark clouds rolled away. Let’s call today DAY ONE, and relax.

Why does my rage against my ISP always sound like a bell? No particular reason. I take great umbrage with commercial incompetence, and the ISP is capable of one thing; cashing my payment, month after month. Nothing else. When Netflix tells me that it can’t get there from here, I know where to place the blame. Oh, look, signal has been restored. The pause in programming was sufficient for me to get the supper dishes done AND feed the dog.

Spent some time following a Twitter thread, dealing with that special world comprised of low-pay jobs. I’m sure you can name a few, but flipping burgers seems to come up on the short list for many people. Home theater relies on a certain level of illusion. Usually, it doesn’t get there, for me. Until this evening; rarely have I sat through a couple of hours of mindless comedy, stood up and headed elsewhere at the end, saying to myself that it was good. Not great. Well, OK. Took my mind off reality. And, isn’t that the point?

Just over a kilometer from my kitchen window to the shore. I take great comfort (and pride) in that number, because my long term plan involves staying here. Far enough inland to be safe from rogue waves, yet close enough to hear the sound. At least, when the wind is blowing the right way.

There are many ways to mark the passage of time. I don’t go for notches on my belt (structural defect) or tattoos (in general). Instead, I try to maintain a mental timeline. Things like “where I was in school” or… no, the school one worked well for many years (study and work confounded). But now, I’m left with “which movie came out that year”.

With our anchor firmly embedded in the driveway, it’s time to conjecture about life (in a different dimension). What if we could travel? Where would we go? Or as an alternative, what if we loaned our travel gear to someone else. Say, the kids…
