A mixed day
Even though the media can’t repeat what he said, the word was out; George Carlin has gone to find out if the “Invisible Guy” really does exist. For those of us that first learned about commercial humour from a friend’s vinyl library, he was one in a million. Irreverent jokes do have a place; otherwise he wouldn’t have marked our collective psyche as he did. George, you’ve left the party far too early.
The family is watching something called the Spiderwick Chronicles. I’ve only seen part of the movie, due to a phone call that left me with a chair back between me and the storyline, but it made me think of a wonderful book called The Borrowers, except that things have gone terribly wrong along the way. This movie is a good diversion on a rainy evening, except that you should wait until the small and impressionable are safely in bed. Around here, that group is out for the night, literally.
This is the biggest party night of the year in La Belle Province, and they’re expecting a crowd that may reach 150,000 up on “The Plains”. That will mean a lot of wet tired people come tomorrow, because we’ve been in shower mode for what feels like a month now. When the grass only gets dry enough to mow through wishful thinking, and manhole covers are blowing off in parts of town due to storm water, it’s “enough already with the water, Invisible Guy”.
I watched a whole afternoon of entertainment from the Gaspesie this afternoon. A lot of very talented people in that part of the world – when there isn’t much in the way of work, people find other ways to use their time. Much like Newfoundland and Cape Breton, if you will.
