Water use

posted in environment |

The returns from last evening didn’t evaporate under the warming of a new day. In about three weeks, we’ll have a different legislature, and across social media the collective sigh of relief was evident. A very positive spin to keep us moving forward. I can relax for the first time in a decade; no more nasty surprises.

This evening, I allowed myself a dose of pure science. The province is in the first stages of a new law, concerning the use of water. Given the importance of the question, I decided to attend the regional meeting and see what I could learn. The presentations were “filled to the brim” with data, dealing with things like the effect of pumping from a deep well on the surrounding stream beds. I understood the process, and the production was not as mysterious as it would have been if my own job background had been different. In fact, one of the presenters did field work with me, a full forty years ago. I doubt that he recognized me; we were in his field of expertise and I was someone who remembers the thrill of science (up to my knees in mud from an evacuated pond).

Home again, with the temperature up to 10C. They still haven’t harvested my field of potatoes…

Had one of those annoying calls from a person reporting that my computer was at risk due to network processes. I asked if, given the seriousness of the issue, if we could skip the telephone intervention and go straight to a site visit. The caller cut off the connection.
