Change the fan, please
There are many new things to learn each day. For example, I know that ice skates should be sharpened from time to time, and now I’ve learned that snowboards should also have their edge “brought up”. In fact, I saw someone snowboarding for the first time this afternoon. Even though we have a number of boarders in the house, I’ve never had any reason to go to a mountain until this afternoon. To be fair, I was “just” a passenger, but in more than two decades there’s never been any reason to go out to a hill and watch. Here’s what a hill looks like:
Now, I don’t know what it is like to ski, but by the number of cars in the parking lot this is a very popular activity. Note to self: learn more.
Our next adventure of the afternoon was to purchase and install a new kitchen fan. After twenty years, the one we’ve had has been screaming like a banshee (bearing failure) and preparing meals has been painful. The choice was clear; replace it or go on a new diet of cold sandwiches. The guy at the hardware store was informed, helpful and patient. Especially the latter, as he reassured one of us that 300 cfm air flow would be “just fine” for our kitchen. After all, we don’t want the food to be sucked out of the pots.
For installation, I turned this one over to son #2. There comes a time when certain tasks must be assigned to the next generation, no matter how fascinating they might be. Replacing a kitchen fan is (probably) a once in a lifetime job, but my gut feeling was that this was “the time”. He succeeded without a single rude word, broken tool or tear in the fabric of life. We celebrated by going out to a restaurant for a fine supper of Thai food.
