You’re on candid camera

posted in technology |

This evening, while I was reinstalling and testing a pair of webcams (stereo narcissism), the news channel was showing what happens when you have good quality surveillance equipment AND technically naive criminals. You guessed it; caught on candid camera.

The press warns us; we are under the watchful eye more and more. In particular, any time there is a need to protect something valuable, there is probably a small box aimed in the general direction, sending a stream of data to a storage system. In the clips shown this evening, presented as part of the evidence in a criminal case near Montreal, a “daring duo” appear to have been inspired by recent hi-tech adventure movies. The pair decided that instant tellers are much more lucrative from the “inside” and gained entry through suspended ceilings to the lock rooms and money prep areas of a local bank. As they drop into view (from the camera angle) and gather bundles of cash, one has to assume that they believed in their personal invisibility. Not so.

I’m not sure whether video data is admissible in a Canadian courtroom, but if so, these two are going to have a look behind the scenes in a jail, sometime soon.

TV5 screened a documentary on the dark side of the “race” question this evening, and I now have a better idea on how the various white supremacy groups continue to stir their own particular soupy view of society. Not pretty. At least we’re getting some balanced rebuttal on TV.
