Simulations alongside real situations
This is an existential question: if I play a real guitar while the person beside me is playing Guitar Hero, are Wii both playing guitars? Or are we both heroes? Or none of the above. The juxtaposition of real life and simulation, while listening to songs from Boston or Slayer is enough to make my head spin, round and round, like a record.
Actually, I’m pleased to see the boys playing something that doesn’t involve an hommage to those people over at Colt. After several hours of repetitive simulated gunfire, I can see how parents become violent. As for the cars that skid through curves, hit the guardrail and then keep on going; too good to be true. The insurance industry knows that one isn’t even close to reality.
I don’t “game” myself, because colour vision is more important than any other single factor. Recently an Ishihara test came up on Facebook, so I scored my 40% based on best guesses and then watched the scores roll in from elsewhere. There will be no medal presented on the podium to this poor fellow! I guess my skill in trivia will have to suffice.
My odd problem with the wiki that no longer showed images was related to a rogue .htaccess file. The problem is now just a note in the log files and I am well pleased. Time to upgrade the code and see if I can “break” something else. In some ways it’s as good as any video game – the only thing really killed are the hours spent trying to fine tune things.
