Sufficient silver to feed the meter
While preparing my grocery list, I had the plan to go and get “a few things” before heading back home to laze around in the next-to-final day of this heat wave. Instead, the trip turned into something bigger. Started with a real, honest, sit-down breakfast in the local café. I’m easily impressed by a place that can serve eggs, bacon, fried potatoes and coffee, while maintaining the flavours exclusive to each element.
The food list stayed in my back pocket, after we determined that there was sufficient silver to feed a hungry meter. Off to the metropolis. No dog, no lad; this was Mom and Dad, out for an excursion. And we had a plan, of sorts.
The purchase of a new sewing machine had come up in conversation. After all, the one in that box in the basement was a basic model. I agree, there’d been miracles worked with it, over the years, but certain jobs were beyond the scope. With that set out as a basic rationale, we headed in to see the only shop owner I know. Hadn’t seen her in thirty years, but we recognized one another; another kind of miracle.
Believe me, the machines out there now are not “your grandmother’s trusty treadle model”. Feed in some data, via the USB port, push the auto-thread button and stand back. We’re cooking with fire! Sewing on steroids! And happily, this is the time of year when shop owners liquidate inventory, to make space for the next, greatest thing. From where we stood, the current choice had stars in our eyes. It didn’t take long to conclude the transaction.
