Ready for a blue moon

posted in science |

Don’t get distracted by the name. Earlier today, my astronomy app chimed with a bulletin that we’re on the eve of a blue moon. Cool, right!

Not exactly. Despite my current earworm, the orb won’t be blue, and this isn’t even a rare occurrence. Yes, I’ll stare up there, if the cloud cover holds off long enough. Maybe even play with the new, long lens from the security of my deck/balcony. However, there are a lot of full moons on the calendar. The guaranteed twelve, and in times when the start of the lunar cycle aligns with the civil calendar in just the right way, thirteen.

Now, allow for the irregular length of the “month”, which is complicated enough to require learning a poem in grade school. Hold on to that thought for a moment more and Poof! A second full moon in a particular period. Not rare; nothing more than a nod to mathematics.

The progress on the dirt saga is impressive. We now have a “real” driveway, and I executed a lovely three-point turn, earlier, and parked the car with the nose out to the real world. Hiding our “foreign” plate.

Speaking of which, we’re now almost ready for the inter-provincial swap. It will require a new insurance policy, and a car inspection. Went looking for the latter this afternoon, just up the road. Received an invitation to call back, next week, after the mechanic reduces his to-do list.

We also have the base of our retaining wall behind the house. Properly seated, with lots of crushed stone. Much better than I would have managed, even with an afternoon of YouTube training.
