Solid estimated numbers
The whole family was “on deck” this morning. Early. Waiting for a scheduled, important visitor. When the truck (but not THE truck; an necessary distinction) parked out in front by the hydrant, I was ready.
This was estimation day, and the rep from the movers came ready to count. A fancy laptop/tablet. Custom software. All the right questions and a discerning eye. He’s experienced in his domain, and can look at a room and quickly provide an estimated volume and weight.
There’s “wiggle room”, and we will pay (eventually) based on official wayscale numbers. For now, I have an idea of how much (about four tons, requiring half a van). They’ll take care of the packing for our dishes and other glass goods, and they’ll come in a day or so before the load out. The transit will require a couple of days (ample time for us to get down and roll out the welcome mat).
The cost? Not free…
We now spend a week or two, continuing our efforts with boxes and tape. A couple of dump loads. Maybe a new recliner, for the future. A diminution of food stocks, and some careful readjustment in the drawers that will remain loaded. My tools are “good to go”, apparently.
Am I happy? Yes. This process lost its novelty value, several months ago. I just want to “lift anchor”. Did my ancestors go through this? Probably, and they had to face weeks at sea; I’ll get by with a long day in the “drive thru province”.
