An outage by any other name would smell as sweet

“He jests at scars that never felt a wound”. Wait, that must be me. Back when I memorized the line during a high school English class (actually, it took more than one class, because the whole text was of low relevance to me in those halcyon times), I didn’t realize that it would finally be useful, four decades later. Today the news made it all clear.

You see, Blackberry has had problems. All over America, people are holding their wee, tiny but oh so important devices and there’s no new mail. My first, and second, response is to say “whatever.” The world is still turning, and somewhere a wave has crashed on a beach. It’s impolite to laugh at the problems of others. Your Blackberry isn’t working? “There is a BlackBerry data service interruption that is causing intermittent service delays for BlackBerry subscribers in North America,” RIM said. Let’s see how many times we can say the word Blackberry without snickering.

I’ve watched a woman on the bus preparing one of those oh so important messages and the word efficient didn’t cross my mind. After all, ten minutes to do what a real computer would allow in thirty seconds doesn’t strike me as an optimal strategy. And now, it’s down. I must stop laughing loudly, because my mother taught me to be polite.

Maybe the “outage” is a message from a benevolent deity. It’s time to get on with your life and use blackberries as they were intended to be used; flavouring in a cup of yogurt.
