A reflection on inventory

posted in genealogy |

Today saw me off to the box store, to buy milk and a bath mat. No connection between the two. Amazing how many other things are available in a big store these days; the general store can blush and go home. I even found a plastic round of sour candies, just in case.

Seriously, though. I remember when the annual inventory day would come up at the local K-Mart, and a gang from residence would line up early for what were pretty easy jobs. Tag anything that didn’t move. If you were really lucky, you’d make it past the downsizing in early afternoon, and get the job of pulling those tags and adding them up. We were amazed, generally, to find that there was something over a million dollars in inventory. I wonder what the figure is, in modern times.

This was a designated day for a restaurant meal. There aren’t many occasions to assemble the family; today, we were short the Euro traveler. Anyhow, the dog obediently agreed to stay in the car, what with the balmy weather and all, and we were off for a fancy chicken assortment. A chance to catch up on the news, and a reason to avoid another evening of TV.

I also put another family group together in the “big dataset”; finally found the parents of an old friend and climbed a couple of levels higher in that tree. Each discovery means that I’ve also taken the time to explore a new neighbourhood using the historical atlases.
