A moment to reflect
The bird has been served and its remains packed into cold storage. The piles of giftwrap have been sent out to the big green bin (oddly enough, most special papers don’t recycle, yet). The dog has a new enemy, in the form of a weight bag with a chain that she imagines as a dangerous adversary. We’ve been on the phone, and the web and in videoconference.
We’ve even sent a “hot meal” out to a less fortunate member of the family, who is caught up in the trap of working on a holiday. My first impulse is to feel fortunate that there’s enough work to go around. We’re not in a deep economic depression in spite of the fine efforts of the ruling and financial classes.
Other families aren’t going to remember this particular date for the best of reasons. The young man who went missing in Nova Scotia (friend of a friend) did not make it back from the cabin in the woods; searchers don’t always find what they’d like when it comes to missing persons. My sympathies to all those who knew him and loved him; a large number if the Facebook presence is any sign…
We’re lucky enough that the worst happening in our house is a dog who wants to attack a weight bag.
I’ll take a few minutes to count my blessings before calling it a day.
