When the new will be the former

posted in environment |

I wish I was better informed, and not simply the “ideological result” of corporate media. How else can I explain to those around me that I don’t think our new government is right in its environmental choices? I must be misled, right? If the current minister says that Canada cannot make its own choices, that we must participate in the three-legged race with some kid from next door, he must know better than me, right? After all, I don’t have all the information that passes across his desk, and the media are always wrong. Period.

The boys in the expensive suits are over in Bali (although many there have adopted a laidback dress code, given the humidex) and they’re letting the rest of the world know, clearly, that Canada doesn’t need or want or have any intention of adopting climate friendly policies. It would be bad for business. Period. Full stop. New paragraph.

How I wish for a new paragraph. One that isn’t written by the petroleum industry. One that says we can reduce our emissions; the technology exists and we have enough cash in the bottom of our drawers, all of us, to bear the pressure. At this point, the decision of the new government to maintain status quo is one that isn’t supported by the electorate, and if we ever get a chance to express our opinion, the new government might just become the former government. It makes my day greener, just the thought.

Because any time a legislative body no longer reflects the will of the people, the media has got the story straight. Canada can not hold its head high, we’ve screwed up through inaction. I did my tiny bit today, by lugging the groceries home, on foot, with reusable carrybags. It didn’t hurt, it didn’t require any gasoline (in your face, petromonsters), and we did have supper at the usual time, prepared using earth-friendlier (a tiny bit) hydroelectricity. If my 30 million neighbours would do something similar, we could make a dent in our emissions, we could serve as a model to the kid next door and we could begin to join the rest of the known world, who have clued in to the fact that something is wrong with Gaia. Are you listening, new government?
