Turning wow into oww

posted in education |

Another taxing day over. The returns are in. In simplest terms, this is where”wow” gets rewritten, to “oww”. Yes, the salary looks promising, until you see the part that goes back to the source. I’m a public servant, and every cent I make is carefully filtered. Only the remains of a rich stream make it into my pail. Whole milk into skim.

Do you need any other analogies? Didn’t think so. As part of the maligned middle class, I can have some of my money. Enough for this year. The next time around, I’ll file a last return as “gainfully employed”, and then join the ranks of the fixed income crowd. In passing, they’re not exempt from the filter, either.

Spent some time reading about the care of guitars for use in a recording studio, AND I UNDERSTOOD! This last year or so, I’ve been absorbing new ideas, thanks to the wonderful world of the MOOC. “The price is right”. What isn’t clear, in the early days, is if the material has practical use. I can now confirm that the lessons are part of my education. In fact, I’ve signed up for a tenth course, started over the weekend.

This time around, I’m learning about maps. Why maps? “To see where I’ve been and where I’m going”. I use maps. I make (simple) maps. I get a kick out of surfing the planet via Google. I may not have the opportunity (or the desire) to explore an alley in Romania, but I can, and the maps help me compare their reality to mine.
