My nod to voice mail hell

posted in technology |

This is another in an ongoing “what I did at work” posts. Have to write a few, if I want to reminisce later. Hang in there, it won’t be too painful.

The week started with a request from one of our schools. Could we (meaning I) modify their voice mail menu? Never done it, but there had to be a way. I checked the software, and found an entry point that seemed plausible; that is, I could see a menu, with empty blocks to add additional branches. And, after sending off an email to the company responsible for support, I decided to wade in and see if I could solve the puzzle by myself.

Actually, it was pretty easy. First try, and the menu system “worked” properly. The only thing left was to record the voice prompts. This will take a bit longer:

  • My voice isn’t “suitable”
  • The person I figured as a likely candidate works in a different department; approval will be required from a set of coordinators
  • The menu changes will need to be approved (yes, by a set of coordinators)
  • Soon

I’m OK with that. I tried something completely new. I didn’t fail. I will have a better understanding about how voice mail hell is designed (an important life skill). And when I leave, the problem will belong to someone else, and won’t follow me like an unwanted pet. All good.

Work is like that. An ongoing fugue. By the time I understand the process, I’ll have left the building. With a smile and a tune in my head.
