Let me light a candle
One of those cable TV shows that fills the quiet time between suppertime news and prime time just showed me a life skill: how to light a candle at the bottom of a tall vase. Using a sprig of spaghetti. Of course, those of us who grew up in the shadow of a church already knew how to light candles, but there is certainly a new generation in need of enlightenment. Moving right along, while you try to visualize the concept.
The Canadian resident is in a tizzy. Canada Post has announced that they will phase out home delivery over the next sixty months. To listen to the various talking heads on the news, akin to dropping a bomb. Who will watch out for dead folk (that didn’t check their mail recently)? What about those with walkers and canes who will be forced to navigate the (average 250m) to a community box cluster? And all those posties who will have to find a new (well-paid) profession. Let me provide counterpoint.
For the last quarter of a century, my house has not had “personal postal service”. Instead, one of those dreaded community box clusters has quietly marked the far corner of our yard (yes, less than 250m away; I’m fortunate). If I don’t pick up my mail, someone will notice (because all those worthless flyers will clog up the works) and make the assumption that I, too, have joined the recently deceased (or terminally disinterested by offers to sell me chicken and realty service). And the parcel truck still manages to pass when there is nobody here, just as it does in the other sectors of the city.
I will grieve the loss of a postie I never knew. Let me light a candle, using my new life skill.
