Practice makes imperfect

posted in music |

Part of my identify crisis, musically speaking, is that I don’t like to practice. I have no problem with the concept. I enjoy playing my instrument while “on task”. I just don’t have the discipline to regularly ignore everything else. Call it a symptom of attention deficit, label it as laziness, accept it as part of my character set. Practice makes imperfect.

Now, on the other hand, improvisation is fine. I can “play along with the radio” for hours. I can even sit down, put the sheet music on the stand and perform the same piece over and over again. Just don’t call it “practice”. Nobody practices eating. Nobody practices petting the dog. Why should we practice music?
