Expensive status quo

posted in politics |

With a pot of curried pork simmering in the background, I figure it’s time to write (before I fall asleep). I’m already not much of a night owl; thrown into the equation that silly clock shuffle we did over the weekend and the night seems long, already. Reading various forums, there isn’t much support for this remnant of a wartime austerity effort. Enough already! Come summer, let the sun decide when daytime begins and ends.

The municipal elections didn’t fill me with joy. At a time when the city seems determined to excavate a deep hole using tax dollars instead of shovels, the municipal employees have their backs to the proverbial wall. The old/new mayor believes he has a mandate to lower their wages and savage their pension plans. Talk about taking the joy out of conversation. The new fanion is a request to the provincial government to modify municipal statutes; letting the Short Fella do whatever he pleases. This is a man who made his personal fortune on the back of another pension fund!

I will gladly leave their mess behind when the opportunity presents itself.

Interesting (for me) to read the comments about this round of elections from the three (wise) sons. I’m not responsible for their take on the situation, but all have commented on the fruitless outcome of yesterday. Imagine: $4 million to change things NOT AT ALL. And we’re do for a provincial round in the next season, followed by a federal slapdown next year. Little chance of actual adjustment to the current mess. The older I get, the worse I feel.
