Reflection without a mirror

posted in politics |

Our world is turning upside down. Proof. Lots. Let’s see: yesterday we had three byelections at the federal level in Quebec and no candidates from the “Natural Leading Party” won the toss. However, veils may be to blame. The loonie has grown chubby from all the cheap job food we’ve been serving, and may close at par with the neighbour’s currency real soon now. The thermometer is down to within a degree of freezing at night, and we’re still technically in summer. Global warming except for us. And on and on.

Seriously, is there anything more fascinating than the post-electoral explanations of politicians? Whether you win or lose, it gets a positive spin. From the political species AND their symbiotic friends the journalists. No such thing as an election in which normal people voted because they thought the list of candidates was just the right length. Somehow, I don’t see Joe Sixpack (Eightpack for those who live in Nova Scotia) standing there with the stubby pencil saying to himself “My vote could help the leader of the party in third place in the polls to prove that he really has the Right Stuff. Sorry, Mr. Wolfe.

The hearings on reasonable accomodation are underway. Funny thing, though; the people who are stepping up to the microphone seem to lack any sense of reason or reasonability. In fact, if ever there was a forum to demonstrate how racism is alive and well… but I’m being unkind and unfair. Isn’t that why the government started this unholy roadshow in the first place?

One sign of how starved for real news we are is that the loser of the French presidential elections is on tour here, and she hasn’t committed herself to either side in the ongoing angst debate that we hold so dear. Now wasn’t that polite of her? Whatever her job is. Is loser a job?

Time to go take my niceness pills.
