A flood of memories
The heart is warmer now. After watching another in a lifetime of Canadian TV movies, I’m willing to admit that you have to reach a certain (cultural) age before the appreciation quotient reaches above simmer. Tonight, a whole slew of oblique references to our Island author. With Mom played by Megan Follows. Does it get any better than that?
In case you missed it, the movie Booky Makes Her Mark was our cultural content for today. A cameo appearance by Lally Cadeau playing Lucy Maud. Practically the core cast of the new Degrassi. Scenery from Hamilton (OK, I’ve never actually been to Hamilton, but I drove by it once in a schoolbus which counts for something). The Toronto Telegraph as the local newspaper. I’m old enough to remember that rag.
Some anachronisms… those people had electric lights in their house. And the stupid boy had filtered smokes. And a car without mud on it (I know, TV can afford to keep the rented cars clean).
On the up side, great swing music. Megan Follows. In fact, how could there be any program that pretended to mention Lucy Maud without having “the real Anne Shirley” standing up (sorry Annekenstein) for home and hearth and family values while teaching autonomy to a young aspiring writer. No red heads, but the hair curler that scorched newspaper was enough to bring back a smelly flood of kitchen memories (not mine, perhaps cultural memories).
There’s not much else to do on a quiet Saturday night besides watch the CEEB and eat whatever isn’t nailed down in the cupboards. Life is good.
