The eventual unpacking

posted in travel |

The charm of rapid travel is not lost on me. It’s just not something I practice. All winter long, my bus system gets me to and from the office with only a couple of hours as penalty. Come summer; nothing really changes.

Today was the designated travel day, and after a satisfying breakfast at the inn, we climbed back into the coach and directed the horses out through the gate. Come on, use your imagination. Even a small car is as comfortable as a stagecoach. And although our virtual horses are fast, the distance is long. Typically, ten hours from there to here. We take the requisite stops for fuel and water, and the dog was very cooperative. Only one stupid walk by  the side of a busy highway with nothing other than mosquito bites to show for the effort.

Home, on the tail end of rush hour, my immediate impulse is to unpack the car. Put life back into “normal mode”. It takes hours, and I’m going to leave the tent repack until tomorrow. Most of my clothes have been accounted for, and the one computer power supply that got “dragged” is part of the cost of doing business. By tomorrow, vacation will be memories anticipating the next year. Believe me.

There wasn’t even much mail waiting, after three weeks away. A small cable order from eBay, a large envelope containing the annual report from the university, and some offers for additional credit from banks where I don’t do business. I think I’m going to go to sleep early, and carry on with life tomorrow.
