A noisy cooling effort
This was a noisy day. Sometime yesterday, the air conditioning in our server room failed. Not good. Once the temperature hit 30C, alarms rang, and we were put to work trying to find a solution. Overnight, things continued to warm up, and the industrial repair firm were called in, under cover of darkness. No joy. The rooftop compressor is just a lump, and no replacement before early next week. Plan B, anyone?
With doors and windows open, a large fan blew cooler air into the server room. All day long. At my desk, 78 dB of noise. In the doorway, 85 dB of noise, with a breeze. Not fun. By mid afternoon, with no reduction achieved, two larger air conditioning units were brought in, and the ductwork emerged from a makeshift cardboard and duct tape seal around the server room door. Evacuated air warm enough to keep a home warm in a Canadian winter. The virtual server load was redistributed, allowing shutdown of the better part of one rack. Not fun. By the regular quitting time, I welcomed the sounds of the outdoors. We’ll see where things stand, two days from now.
I’ve received a pair of “cap locks” from Hong Kong. Lovely postage stamps, for the record. These plastic gadgets are designed to prevent lens cover loss by providing a stow point. Can’t wait to try them in the real world. At $1.35 each, nothing ventured and much to be gained.
Just attempted the second quiz from my online history course. More difficult than I expected, and I will have to do some study before my rewrite.
