Not quite bright enough

posted in photography |

In a flash, my confusion returned. Let me explain. Today, for the first time in years, I used my fancy flash to take some photos. A big family affair, where the light was important. And since I’ve been “contemplating” the purchase of another electronic flash, either as reinforcement or replacement, I wanted to know how the current equipment would work out for me.

I’ve been a user of electronic flash for much longer than I like to admit, and until the new digital cameras arrived on the market, I had about as good as it gets. A 402, with its twin. We’re talking lighting for the real world. Arenas, gymnasiums, outside on a dark night. All within “range”. But the new gear works at a whole different voltage level, and so the good gear went into storage and the new gear continued to inspire trepidation. Never quite enough.

There’s my problem. I know things could be better. And I know that if I want to spend an obscene amount of money (this is a hobby, after all), I could return to being the bright light in the room. Won’t happen. But the idea of getting a flashgun that is considered as dependable; that still pokes in the ribs. We’ll see.

The reception (that big family affair) was actually a good time. A lot of people that I didn’t know, but some people that have important places in my family constellation. It was good to get together. Doesn’t happen often. And with the marching of time, we’ll probably not get a do-over on this afternoon, which makes the photos important.
