Road trip called due to weather

posted in travel |

We started the day by a visit with a Mountie. Nothing untoward; the ghost car was parked beside ours, we looked inside and received an invitation to sit inside. The front seat. Actually an act of public relations. Surprising how two years on the road can wear down a fine automobile.

Our own road trip started off with the weather getting warmer, to the point where opening a window would raise the temperature inside. Quickly. So we kept things closed and on air, until the rainy season started in mid-afternoon. What rain it was… we didn’t join countless others by pulling off the road, but by the time we reached Miramichi, the urge to travel any more for the day was washed away.

The storms had already passed through that area, if the lack of electricity and the number of downed branches were an indication. I joined the line at the reception desk in a motel that offered wireless, and we were soon rewarded with a room in the motel former known as “comfort”. Strange legal saga behind that one. The dog could stay for six dollars, and the boy sleeps free.

Electricity continued to flicker through the evening, but the tornado warnings were for areas south of here, so we became temporary residents of Newcastle. The coalfields of the Cape seem far off.
