Wish I had some new gear

posted in technology |

It would be so easy to spend some money right now and solve a slew of silly stumbling blocks in my day to day life. Yes, computing blocks. Are there other kinds?

Tonight, just as supper dinged ready, I learned that printing services had failed on our network. No sign of the laser printer, and the print server didn’t want to talk to me (when you work with programmable hardware, you fall under the illusion that there’s a dialogue. This, after another session on the Dell site, figuring out what I’d like to have as my main laptop. You see, THIS one has a number of things that don’t work any more, due to age:

  • noisy fan
  • intermittent DVD drive
  • failure of those buttons that do things like “eject”, “mute sound”, etc.

When I put the CD in for the printer driver, I had to do a software uninstall of the drive, restart the machine, enter the control panel and mount the drive, eject the disc, plug in an external drive that I bought for use with the netbook, reinstall the drivers for the printer and try to keep my calm.

Did I mention that a new computer would come with a working fan, a working DVD drive, working buttons and a warranty? Just checking.

The snow storm rated a FAIL, this morning. Montreal got school closures, and we got flurries. Tomorrow, the equinox and we’re into springtime. Next chance for a free day off will be if a heat wave strikes before summer. I guess I know the logical outcome of that faint hope.
