A close encounter with a phone or two

posted in technology |

A moment of reflection, and curiosity. For some odd reason, the Playbook and the electronic picture frame have small tabs of duct tape covering visible LEDs and camera lenses. The ones here at home, I mean. Methinks that there may have been paranoid moments during the heat wave last month.

On other fronts, we have a “boil water” order in place; the first in twenty-five years. No details, just a warning that one minute will suffice. Minor bug, if such fleeting heat can strike it dead. I didn’t drink any, so there are no other effects… although I had an impulse to go and subscribe to a cellular telephone service this evening.

I’ll backtrack; during vacation, the ability of the only smartphone in the car to “surf” was genial. Wikipedia, wherever. And I started to reflect on the fact that I’m the only one in the house (and the office) without a gadget always within reach. So, I started shopping. Reading reviews. Trying to rationalize. I even convinced son #3 to come along to the local box store for a bit of hands on.

The clerk had no interest in me as a client. Has commission gone the way of the dodo? Or did I not look “cellworthy”. In any case, after handling the two devices that seem to match my imagined need (an iPhone 4S or a Samsung Galaxy S3), I thanked the young man for his attention and frank appraisal of upcoming price points and headed back  home. Phone free (since free phone doesn’t really mean what I thought). In a couple of months, after Apple astonishes the fanboys of America, I’ll come back and see what the market will bear.
