An early enough getaway
Early morning starts are highly overrated. Even the intention is due to an overdose of optimism. In keeping with the usual scheme of things, we aimed high, fell short and accepted that being on the road by 06h15 is the functional equivalence to the forecast four o’clock.
And the forecast for the weather was spot on. Sunny, with light cloud scenery. No headwind (or tailwind). By suppertime, the nine hours of travel had us squarely on target – red soil all around, with a wee bit of roadwork. In fact, this marks the first time in recent memory that we had no (capitalize that: NO) torn up highway between town and the east end. Is this what happens when the economy is about to go all wrong?
We’re early this year, or so we were told. Not even in the “forecast to arrive” list, but it meant that site #43 was unencumbered. Now, squatters rights are invalid in this jurisdiction, but we received a verbal permission to hold the place for a few days at least. A fireplace with no burning ban. A set of trees that will support a longwire. A view of the water worthy of a photo (OK, maybe tomorrow).
The tent has been pitched and the sleeping space allotted. All that’s left to do before dark is find a trace of wifi (so that this post is actually posted). Let vacation begin. And in keeping with good camping nutrition, I found a flat of local cinnamon buns. Honey, I’m home!
