Foregone conclusions

posted in politics |

Remember those elections we suffered through, only six months ago? Remember some of the promises? Didn’t think so. After all, if the politicians can’t remember the set of promises, why should the common man or woman be expected to. Anyhow, today another of the dreams faded.

We were assured that there was relief coming. Tax reductions. New incentives to put on a happy face. All premised by the reduction of the federally imposed deficit, only a few months/years away. Today, the Master Forecaster announced that times are still tough, and the deficit won’t be beaten for at least another three or four years. Right about the time of the next scheduled elections. Meanwhile… hang tough. It’s for our own good. Irrationally high axes build character, and pay for new toys.

Funny how big business (banks, oil companies, etc. etc.) seem to be immune to tough times. Profits are healthy. No talk of deficits there. Read the annual reports, printed on gold-edged paper. Things are just fine in the land of higher finance.

Surprise is an unnecessary emotion when it comes to the new government.

In other foregone conclusions, that big pipeline from the wilds of Alberta to the wilds of Louisiana is still “under study” by the US State Department. Doesn’t stop the trucks from unloading piles of unburied pipe for that line. Just in case. After all, industry must be ready.

One bit of good news: the asteroid didn’t strike the Earth and annihilate life as we know it. Sometimes, I just shrug. Sometimes, I say “More the pity!” Maybe next time.
