An Acadian afternoon

posted in travel |

One of the common denominators of camping has been the use of dogs as a reason to meet and greet. No pooch gets the kind of loving attention offered up by strangers who happen to share a tenting ground. A scratcher for every ear, if you will.

This morning, we met the neighbours with the jumbo sized dog; a black Great Dane with one ear sailing high. The dog has no other characteristic that says “Come to me, wandering human”, other than the size. From what we were told, Julius draws an admiring crowd where’re and when. And after the initial sniff and spin, we did what fanciers do; we told stories of dogs, past and present that have added to our lives. But enough idle chatter about dogs.

This afternoon, we went into Souris and joined hundreds of others at the light house. Maybe I exaggerate the number, but we were all together to salute the French identity of the town. Even the politicians and the grey mascot were out for the occasion; the mascot added dignity to the gathering. Music, traditional foods, a chance to climb up into the lighthouse and yell down the ladder that the computer monitors were off again. A long story, but you can blame it on the musicians with their excessive power requirements.

There were face painters, mobile makers and men in wooden shoes with far too much food to offer to all and sundry. We stayed until the end (partly in hope of winning a door prize, whatever the nature). The sand sculpture didn’t reach completion, despite the number of willing scrapers and brushers.

We headed on down to Cardigan for a great supper.
