Perusal of used stock

posted in travel |

Call it tradition; today we returned to Papa Joe’s for the Thursday special. Corned beef in a boiled dinner. Lots of vegetables, a trace of mustard on the side, and a friendly greeting from the staff. Feels like home to me.

We were in town without a clear goal, so we decided to go visiting; old friends on the cusp of a changed lifestyle (once the winter has passed). I learned yet another approach to home heating, one that could be applied to my current house if I wanted to invest some time and a few dollars. That hot water heater which keeps things ready for an impulsive shower could also be used to warm the floors. Install some tubing beneath the living room, add some valves and a heat exchanger from SEC, (here on the Island) and enjoy toasty toes all winter. Probably won’t get done before it’s time to move along, but knowledge is never wasted.

I cannot pass by a good used book store without a cursory check of the inventory. Locally, Charlie is a veteran in the perused page wars, and he has reached the age where a federal pension is an available perk. I’ve known Charlie a long time; must mean that my turn is coming. I stayed a bit longer while my roadie called Quebec to find out about a used car (for Charlie). That’s what touring friends do; punctual translations. And, while waiting, I caught up on old news from UPEI from his assistant, who knows the same crowd of rowdies that I do.

On the way to city limits, we passed a pawn shop with a brace of patrol cars at the door and a room full of constables. Great time to check out their stock and get perused by the police, so we went in for a quick round of shopping and price comparisons. Nothing to take home, unfortunately.

This might be the first evening where a fire is possible. With the rain, I may also need to be sprayed for blight, just like the rest of the spuds.
