Along the trail and other moments

posted in travel |

When the wind blows the full coffee mug over and you start from scratch, take it as a sign that camping requires one to pay attention.

Taking snapshots of sheep wasn’t enough; we stopped at a nearby ranch (is that the term of choice) to learn about the animals, from fleece to blanket. Seriously, I had a chance to get eye to eye with a motley crew of Suffolks and Chevriots.  Bound for slaughter, in large part, after giving up their curly locks.  Nothing is wasted; a lamb provides chops and skin and so much more, and when the freezer is full the wool becomes blankets. We bought one, just because, and we didn’t kidnap either of the friendly dogs.

I’m involved in some sort of reformation, that had me eating a salad instead of real breakfast fodder yesterday. Today, a hike along the trail outside of Montague. A measured  5 km, but I found rest pauses when photographing waters and wild flowers and what I think was a hazelnut fruit. Have to get the field guide out to be certain. Second time this vacation where I used up all the juice in both camera batteries, which brings further shooting to a halt until I get things recharged.

We cooked up a feed of scallops for supper,  prepared  with a tiny bottle of wine that I managed to drop, not once but twice, before we even cleared the cash register. Thanks to the small volume and thick glass of the bottle, no drops were spilt in vain.

And finally, we went to the local ceildh this evening. In a renovated community hall, complete with door prizes and 50-50 draws and a lunch of tea and biscuits smothered in jam. Due to my reformation, I abstained. The musical talent covered more than five decades of range.
