All around the circle
Without being aware of it, I’ve been working through sort of a bucket list during this trip. Successfully, to boot.
- Operate on the Internet while at sea [X]
- Taste a bakeapple [X]
- Spot a moose, just in time [X]
- See puffins, on land [X]
And today, I added another…
- See icebergs, at sea [X]
Before you get all “Well! Those are tiny!”, remember that 90% of the mass is submerged, and the fishing boat had already passed. The boat was running for cover from the giant floating monsters!
We entered another section of the province today.
The branches at the top represent (poorly) the Twillingate region. Today we were able to go “all around the circle”, as mentioned in a famous folksong.

Fogo, Twillingate, Moreton’s Harbour
All around the circle!
I don’t want your maggoty fish
They’re no good for winter
Well I could buy as good as that
Down in Bonavista.
Not to Fogo (it’s on an island that requires taking a ferry), but we did go into the ferry compound (got some odd looks from the real passengers). However, I had an excellent meal of Crab au gratin in Twillingate, and we went all the way to Moreton’s Harbour, just because it was there…
Twillingate is the kind of place that postcards are made of – the panoramic variety. Here is one little section, just to whet your interest.
I’ll close with a small mention of the isolation of some of these villages. Now, there are roads, but back in the 1800’s you put your boat in the water if you wanted to go for a visit.
