Tell the world I’ve gone to sea

posted in travel |

Too quick with the patting my own back for this year’s car packing; I forgot to bring an inverter. Little matter. The local box stores were open for breakfast, and I now own a third or fourth example. Soon be able to use them as stocking stuffers.

The run across Nova Scotia went quickly, even with a slight detour into areas unknown to the GPS. Coupled with the mediocre road map offered up by the province, which discounts most local roads as unnecessary to note, it is a wonder that tourists ever dare to leave the beaten tracks.

In North Sydney, I found the street with my name on it, and my family will have pictures for posterity. Of course, we had hours to kill, so we drove up and down until the draw of the ferry at the dock became too strong. More photos, and then we headed off to find a place for a filling meal. Again; don’t trust the GPS. After choosing a local restaurant, the hint that we had another 328 km to go before arrival was too much for growling tummies. Turn around and find things the old-fashioned way.

If you are in the area, Rollie’s Wharf is worth the detour. An excellent surf ‘n turf with real vegetables and potatoes, followed by an Irish Cream cheese cake that could turn me into a dessert hound. I wonder if they do delivery? The harbour is busy. The Leif Erikkson joined the Atlantic vision, and hours of marshalling trucks into place began.

The deal seems to be that a certain number of tractors with flashing lights will tow trailer after trailer into place, and I assume the same transportation ballet is performed on the other side. Saves on drivers, but you have to have the time.

We were allowed to board about an hour before departure, and the cabin was/is very comfortable. Wifi (for now), TV, a front window… I have the same view as the captain, one deck up! Couldn’t have hoped for better placement. With a full twelve hours of sailing time, I can pretend that I’m the master of all I survey (even if the wheel isn’t mine). And if I get tired, there’s even a bed close at hand.
