Approach to the limit

posted in education |

Half way through the weekend, with nothing to report. No good, no bad. The groceries are in, with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables in the larder, an attempt to live longer.

I did purchase a “tripod holding strap”, in one of those strange transactions where I go online, reveal my identity and then stop by the retail outlet where I could have shopped in relative anonymity. Guess the merchant can add me to a list of potential clients for sometime in the future. How important is that? How many people in sales base their projections on lists of names? Wait until they discover the telephone directory!

I’ve “dropped in” to a movie where the protagonist is a student on the edge of a pass/fail cliff. Is this considered to be unique? Did the director ever go to school? From where I’ve sat (near the back of the classroom, on the right side), most of the assembled multitude get there at some point. I hit my moment during my third year, with a letter (form letter) from the Dean advising me to do something better in future. I did. I started going to class and taking notes. No big secret, once you learn about it. Marks went up, feelings of adequacy returned. A win/win situation.

Back to the movie. The student doesn’t “get” calculus. Again, is this something unique? I tried calculus;  it decided that I would never make it past zero, I moved on to other fields. Now, in reflection, the supposed lack of arcane knowledge changed absolutely nothing.
