A warm icebox

posted in technology |

The cool wind is welcome, when the icebox is out of service. Believe me, I know this from first hand experience.

Several years ago, our refrigerator stopped running. No need to chase the big old box. And so we shopped, under great pressure, and purchased a brand new model complete with extended warranty. Usually, the added cost is a way of subsidizing the store’s greed, but this time around we seem to have won the side bet.

Currently, I have a refrigerator that is running at a constant 60F and a freezer that holds steady at -10F. One is good. When the kids noticed that the milk was warm, this morning, I avoided any signs of panic; there’s still a snow bank outside. Instead, we transferred our food to an exterior location, did some simple tests (check for clogged coils, etc) and then I called the local store.

Late this afternoon, I made a pre-appointment with a repair company (these things are never simple) and took great relief from the agent’s affirmation. We’re still under warranty. Unless things go very sour in the next 24, there will be no need to budget for a new icebox.

The next question… what appliance is going to fail? Nothing lasts a lifetime anymore (sorry, Frigidaire, for punching a pinhole in your myth balloon). Will we have to replace? Hmm. We’ve got mainly new stuff. I can afford to replace the VHS (don’t need one), or the toaster, but anything higher on the price list is going to come with pains.
