One more AP in place
My prejudices are showing. When asked how I’d advertise my favourite campground, the first thing that came to mind was “It’s not Cavendish!”. Guess you have to be there.
But what is the answer when someone wants to know your favourite [fill in the blank]. Unless you’ve chosen something that is really too big to be hugged, there isn’t room to share with the rest of the world. What makes something special? Can you share that with a large number of people?
I can praise a book, or a piece of music. I draw the line at my copy of the book, or my media.
And on to other things. Today, I installed a wireless access point. A nice one, that I’d be willing to place in my own home. The physical case makes it easy to confuse with a smoke detector, and it handles N (which my current AP doesn’t). The configuration was much like any other I’ve seen… get a range of IP addresses that are common to the AP and the configuration laptop. Open the web browser and go into the software setup. Assign a real IP address range and a security key. Reboot a couple of times.
The selling point for this AP is POE (Power over Ethernet) which allows me to forget the wallwart and feed current/voltage via the Cat-5 cable. One less thing to trip over. Screw the case onto the wall, step back and profit. The transmitted power means that we’ve added one more wing of our office area to the network, and the laptop set can surf.
