Getting a tuned head
I’m not a procrastinator. I just take my time getting around to doing things. It’s not the same.
Case in point: changing skins. A technical term, with little biological connotation. It’s what happens to drums, when they’re properly cared for. Back some months ago (a little voice wants me to substitute years, but it wasn’t that long) I went with the kid to the music store, and we purchased a set of heads. The skins, as we drummers call them. And then a time of reflection took place (nothing to do with mirrors, though). It wasn’t the lack of a key (I’d bought one, just to be sure of having one on hand). In fact, a couple did get done, but the job wasn’t rushed.
Tonight, until I started to get cold feet (the basement is underheated), I went through moves learned a long time ago. Symmetry. Unscrewing bolts in a mystical order, removing the old and resetting the new. Shiny, white, tight after rescrewing those same bolts in the reverse mystical order. Don’t laugh; this is serious stuff. A lopsided head sounds, if you will, lopsided.
And then I tuned, using a trained ear and a finger with the “touch”.
Now, things sound better. All that’s left is for me to commit to practice. And if you’ve followed my theme for any length of time, you know “it don’t come easy”. Something about keeping my greatness in wait for the right time and place. And when the moment comes, I’ll also record myself. Another part of my plan…
