A better backup strategy

posted in computing |

Oddly, I’m on the XO. Haven’t done this in a while. My installation of Ubuntu is very stable, and when the “ears” (antennas) were turned and the cover lifted, things were ready to go. Impressive.

I’m here because the netbook is busy with a software update and the Studio 17 is backing up. I might have a working solution (finally) for that pending perprtual puzzle. How to get a copy of the software on a machine with large, full multiple drives.

I’ve kept an external hard drive for just this challenge, but USB is too slow. With the resources  of China available on eBay, I ordered a new case with an eSATA interface, only to realize that my laptop did NOT have  the needed port. Easy to solve; there are add-on interface cards for  a few dollars more.

The hardware came together this evening, and my backup is running as I type. Much faster, which means that I’ll be offering the service to other laptops here at home.

Typing on the XO is slow. The backup  might be done before I ever tell this tale.

A new episode of Glee this  evening, with a guest appearance of Gwynneth Paltrow as the substitute sex-ed teacher. The girl can sing! Top praise for the Stevie Nicks number…

I’m also due for a new laptop battery, which should be delivered tomorrow. I’ve babied the original Dell one for a long time, and I’m down to just over thirty minutes of autonomy. The dirty little secret of the computer world; every laptop  will need a new battery pack (if you don’t drop the fragile machine or get it stolen first).
