This date not reserved for repetition
Unlike the movie version, Groundhog Day is not about repetition. Rather, it’s about the hope that keeps the weatherworn among us carrying on. Yes, we need another holiday during the short cold days of winter, and I have been suggesting this date for decades now. If the government can’t get their legislative spirits in order, I can still celebrate in my own way.
I admit, this winter has been “easy”. No cases of people trapped inside by weeklong blizzards. No power outages leaving us in the cold dark house without access to the web. No need to raid the rice rations, because our grocery supplies were frozen. So far, so good. And, in six weeks or so, we will greet the first timid buds of a new spring. Or so said the groundhog. Locally, we had a bit of blowing snow so my own shadow remained unseen.
I was back doing support in a local hotel today (meetings with technology as a supporting character). One “stupid” projector, so I had to make an emergency run to one of our schools for a backup. No big deal; the bus system was there, door to door. When all was up and running, I got to sit beside the pool, listening to exotic birds. The stress of the workplace…
But all things must end, and I headed back to my cubicle for a normal afternoon (reminiscent of life in a certain movie). Repetition, without resentment. Life could be worse. What set today aside was a small videoconference breakthrough with another area; one more site that will get increased use.
