The inseparables; religion and state

posted in politics |

Nothing like an afternoon of PBS to leave me completely worshipped out.

Marathon documentaries; I’ve been to war, I’ve sung the blues, I’ve wandered through houses of the architectural hoi-polloi. Today, we went to church, in all its solemn variations. America does have a religious bent (bet you didn’t know that, after all these years), in spite of an official separation of church and state. That’s your church from their state.

Go back to the roots of the European invasion, and there was someone with a cross to bear. If he happened to club someone else with it, well… God was on his side, don’cha know! Seriously, for a nation that preaches freedom of religion, there’s a full set of history books dealing with the odd way it has been handled.

Among the hours of entertainment, I learned about the sheer size of the Billy movement, and the manipulation of presidents by the majority (soon to become the Moral majority). The Constititution and the courts served as flying buttresses for the huge cathedral of state religion. Still do.

I’m glad that I spent a quiet afternoon catching up on some history. Makes it easier to understand who all the players have been/continue to be on the political stage. If you care to watch the six hours of mesmerization, I believe it is available here. No apologetics, no proofs.

We celebrated the end of the afternoon with a grocery run. Right now, we have enough tomatoes to do something interesting, but too little time. Back to work in the morning, et cetera.
