Wonder and common sense

posted in politics |

Courtesy and common sense. Unrelated, but complementary. I watch what goes on around me and wonder.

Watching a rather large delivery truck trying to manoeuvre the limited space between the wall of my office building and the row of parked cars, I wondered why the whole process was taking so long. The driver, trying to back up with one hand on the wheel and the other on his precious cellphone attached to his ear, might have been the pivotal factor. Made me wonder how he would explain to a group of angry office workers if he’d dented their precious metal.

Watching a teenage girl at the bus stop, oblivious to a blind pedestrian with a white cane tickling her ankles. No cellphone or personal music player to explain her distraction. A more alert person pulled her out of the way. Made me wonder what she thought the cane might be used for.

On TV, a live vote in the House of Commons. The measure, destined to restore the long census form (a cause that is dear to my heart, on a common sense basis). The minority group, commonly referred to as “the government” lost the vote to the majority but vow to keep right on doing their best to thwart the will of the people. Made me wonder what the future might hold, when governance no longer requires superiority (numerical or otherwise). Common sense would have it that we are distorting the basis of democracy.  Do you get to vote on having a dictator? I’m wondering…
